Floors Castle International Horse Trials quite literally takes an army of volunteers to run; from jump judges to stewards and scorers to gaitor drivers, the list is endless. Some volunteer a few hours and some the whole weekend. However there is a small team who work all year round the make Floors Castle Horse Trials everything it can be. This is the first instalment of a new series designed to introduce you to the unsung heros of the event.

First of all, meet Steph Robson who as well as being the Assistant Organiser also holds the rather unenviably title of Health and Safety Officer. Steph also runs Best Intent Marquees so is in charge of all things tent!

How did you get involved with Floors and why?

Jamie Innes, legend of the equestrian world, got me involved about 7 years ago – I guess I was ready to give something back to the sport, and it’s a fun team of people and a local eventhector

What’s your horsey history?

Ridden whole life, brought up in eventing family and went through Pony Club and Junior Eventing ranks. Represented GB as Junior at European Champs 1996 at Blair Castle where we won team gold. Competed at Advanced level while at University. Lived in London for a bit then when I came back to the Borders in 2005 I took up eventing again on my late Auntie Tutti’s horse, who I took up to CCI** level. I then had kids and since then have really only had time/energy/nerve to compete at lower levels but I event when I can (in quieter marquee times!) and I do a bit of SJ, dressage and hunting over the winter.

When not helping with the horse trials, what do you do?

Running a livery yard, running the office of Best Intent Marquees, being a sometime parent to two feral boys aged 7 and 6 (Freddie and Alfie), being a dutiful wife and domestic goddess (not really) to my lovely husband Charles, teaching, socialising when feasible riding.

Tell us a secret no one else knows about you:

When I am eating baked beans I have to make sure I get every single bean out the can or I feel sorry for the ones that are left in case they get lonely.

If you had a super power for the day what would it be?

I’d like to be a mermaid so I could go and investigate shipwrecks and find buried treasure.

Keep checking back to meet the next member of the team.
