Floors Castle International Horse Trials were delighted to once again be a qualifying venue for National Schools Equestrian Association Show NSEA Championships which recently took place at Keysoe Equestrian. For the fourth year running, local teams and individuals who qualified at Floors went on to win a number of titles making it a record breaking year at the Championships. Given that the riders are competing against the best NSEA riders in England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland and the rest of the World, this really is an achievement to be proud of. We were sent the following report:

A team of talented young riders who have competed together since they were in Primary 5 at Morebattle Primary School  recently completed a 6 day, 700 mile round trip to Keysoe Equestrian in Bedfordshire  to take part in the National Schools Equestrian Association NSEA Championship. The team who are all now in 4th year at Kelso High School broke 3 records over the duration of the competition. The competition has run for nearly 30 years and each year riders from all over the country attend qualifying competitions to try and win a coveted place at the  Championships held each year in October.

The competition started well when they won the opening individual speed competition on the first night beating 146 other competitors  with a very well planned out jump off course.

The riders then went on to win the 85/90cm Jumping With Style, 85/90cm showjumping and 1m5/1m10 showjumping.  They also had top 6 placings in 95/1m showjumping, 95/1m Jumping With Style and 1m/1m5 jumping with Style. Team members also had a number of top 10 placings as individuals. This meant the competitors had broken three records this year:

  • the first team ever to win a Championship four years in a row
  • the first team to win seven  championships over  four years
  • the first team to win three championships in one year

An amazing achievement for a small school.

A young team from Longridge Towers school also won a very competitive championship. They completed some very nice rounds to triumph in the 75/80cm jumping with Style.

This is an unusual competition in that you not only got judged on your jumping and time, but also on your style, use of the arena and partnership of horse and rider – which is judged by a 4* eventer.  Many of the Borders riders received high scores with many good and positive comments about their riding. Longridge Towers were also placed in the 85/90 showjumping

On the Saturday night there was a Nations Cup Competition  with teams from Scotland, England, Ireland, Wales and The Rest Of The World  competing in both Dressage & Showjumping. Some very good rounds and tests from local riders helped towards Scotland getting 2nd in both events. A few of our riders with Irish ancestry also rode for Ireland and got 3rd place.

There were over 850 riders competing over the 5 days and it was great to see such good representation from Scottish Schools – Jedburgh Grammar, Longridge Towers, Earlston High School, Earlston Primary School, Peebles High School, Biggar High School, Langholm Academy, Oban High School and Kelso High School

Names have been removed as per NSEA Media rules.

Floors Castle International Horse Trials looks forward to hosting more NSEA Championships classes in 2019. More information to follow in due course.
